Winters Flat Primary School Valonia Oaks Planting Day 2016
A few facts about the Valonia Oaks: Oak plants and acorns were imported from Turkey in wooden boxes with glass lids by George Cunnack in 1879. George owned the tannery that was where our oval is now. · Acorn caps were used in the tanning process and replace wattle bark which was nearly extinct in the area. · The oaks were planted in 1879 which makes the three remaining trees 136 years old! · Cunnack’s Valonia Oak Plantation was the first planting of Valonia Oaks in Australia. · In 1893 they produced their first acorns which were spread around the country.

Background Information In term 1, Winters Flat Primary School signed up to a program called ‘ResourceSmart‘. In 2011, the Victorian Government committed $8.305 million over four years to build on the existing ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic Framework. ResourceSmart is a framework that is embedded into a school’s culture, which promotes and supports Sustainability. Winters Flat Primary School is working towards achieving ‘5 STAR Sustainability Certification’. We will achieve this by completing 5 modules covering – Water, Energy, Waste, Biodiversity and Leadership. All parents were invited to support us, and a group of teachers and parents have formed together and have been meeting monthly. The group was introduced to the whole school at Assembly on Monday, 5th of August. We are making pleasing progress with some really important conversations taking place. All classes will be involved with students driving all programs/activities. For an overview of our goals towards achieving 5 STAR Sustainability, follow the link to view Winters Flat PS’ Strategic Environment Management Plan: SEMP Winters Flat Sustainability Group – Timeline of our Journey Click on the link below to read about all the ideas, projects and changes that have been achieved by the Winters Flat community since starting on the road towards 5 Star Sustainability Certification… Winters Flat Sustainability Group-Timeline of our Journey What’s your Ecological Footprint? The EPA has a great website that allows households to calculate their ecological footprint – that is, the impact they leave upon the earth and its resources just by their day-to-day lifestyles. This colourful, interactive program is a worthwhile activity to do with the whole family. Using the link below, take the time to sit down together and watch as your choice of car, home, etc are converted into black balloons and football ovals, to name a few, in an easy-to-understand explanation of our lasting effect on our planet. http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/ecologicalfootprint/ Jeanette calculated the ecological footprint of Winters Flat Primary School, which provides both an interesting eye-opener and a concrete goal for the Sustainability Group and all of us at Winters Flat to work towards changing.
